KM 3500 Lecture notes

Strategic if it has lasting impact. Increase return, because upfront cost may be millions of dollars. There is a learning curve involved in many things.

Nature of knowledge can take many different forms. Knowledge translated into software and can be analyzed. Testing of knowledge is more sticky than codified. Different approaches to manage codified knowledge. Partners Healthcare is an example of codified knowledge. Codified is easier to manage than tacit knowledge. You encourage worker to have tacit knowledge. You don'w manage tacit knowledge, you manage the people themselves. Converting tacit knowledge to codified knowledge. You can create the rules.

Good lessons to learn from others success and your own success. You can always learn something from your mistakes. Capitalize on your mistakes. In organization, mistakes can teach you more than success. Mistakes are to expensive to just let go. Do not publish your mistakes. But be willing to look back and be open to yourself to analyze mistakes. Being open to the whole world in beneficial. Tranparency, will make me vulnerable right?

Appropiability--

Leadership is a whole system that makes you successful. Dr. Jih will give us an article on appropriability. Strong only when replecation is difficult.

Complentary Assets--

Must have both A and B to get full benefits. Example, must have hardware and software. To maximize profit, you have to be able to sell really good.

New Theory of a firm---
Huge repository of knowledge-It is a dynamic growing depository of knowledge constantly being updated, created, validated, exchanged, applied.

If having difficulties when reading article, send Dr. Jih an email. He will go though all seven pieces and make good questions that can be finished in 70 or 80 minutes.
